FLORENCE, S.C. Freshman catcher Jared Barkdoll drove in three runs with a single and a triple to pace 13th-ranked Francis Marion University to a 7-4 non-conference win over Newberry College, Tuesday evening in college baseball action.
Francis Marion upped its mark to 22-10, while the Indians drop to 7-29-1. Because of construction on its home field, Newberry was making its second trip to Florence this season, and was designated as the home team for the contest.
Barkdoll was 2-for-4 with the three runs batted in, while right fielder Nick Stewart was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI and second baseman Omar Quiles was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Three Newberry players collected two hits: catcher Brandon Gardner (2-for-4), first baseman Carlos Pupo (2-for-5), and second baseman Brandon Manasa (2-for-4).
The Patriots manufactured a run in the top of the first. Leadoff batter Derek Kennamer walked, stole second base, was sacrificed to third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stewart. Newberry answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Gardner crossed home plate as part of a double steal.
Francis Marion took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Quiles in the fourth inning. The margin expanded to 5-1 in the fifth inning. Barkdoll tripled home two runs and then scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Chris Hutto.
Newberry tallied a run in the last of the fifth when Joel Keefe singled home Anthony Dillenger. FMU restored the lead to four runs (6-2) with a run in the seventh on an RBI single by freshman Taylor Norfleet. Newberry again trimmed the lead to three (6-3) following a run-scoring groundout by Tyler Manasa in the eighth. Both teams traded single runs in the ninth.
FMU sophomore righty Dusty Floyd improved to 4-0 with a six-inning effort that saw him fan seven and allow seven hits. Sophomore left-hander Craig Schneider earned his first save by pitching the final three frames.
Newberry starter Ernie Castellano (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
Newberry will play at Augusta State at 3 p.m. tomorrow, not 6 p.m. as was originally stated on the website and printed materials.
