Indians record first conference baseball win of 2006 over Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry nine picked up their first conference baseball victory of the 2006 campaign Saturday afternoon with a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the ninth at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field.  The Indians were the home team for the three-game set, as the SAC series was originally scheduled for Newberry.

Wingate won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, 6-4, and the Sunday meeting, 17-7. Wingate moves to 12-26 overall and 4-8 in the SAC. Newberry's record goes to 7-28-1 and 1-11 in the SAC.
 
Game #1 - Newberry 4, Wingate 3
Newberry scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the victory in the opener. The Indians executed three bunts in the last inning. Indian junior shortstop Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) and freshman catcher Anthony Orr (Lantana, Fla.) started the ninth frame with back-to-back singles.
 
Indian freshman outfielder Joel Keefe (Andover, Mass.) sacrificed the runners up one base each. Sophomore Casey Faulkenberry (Camden, S.C.) entered to run for Orr at second base. Newberry junior infielder/outfielder Carlos Pupo (Boynton Beach, Fla.) hit an RBI single to left field to score Dillenger and move Faulkenberry to third.
 
Wingate junior reliever Seth Howell (Jefferson, S.C.) entered to replace senior starter Chad Yow (Stanfield, N.C.). Newberry sophomore first baseman Levi Salters (Vincennes, Ind.) reached on a sacrifice bunt as Faulkenberry beat Howell�s throw to the plate.
 
Pupo stole third base and scored the winning run on another fielder�s choice sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Kris Garcia (Miami, Fla.). Pupo was two-for-four with a double and two RBI in game one. Dillenger had two hits in three tries in the opener.
 
Newberry got on the board with a single spot in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs in the first inning, Keefe singled. He scored on an RBI double by Pupo.
 
Wingate tied the game with one run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, junior second baseman Shaughn Neal (Matthews, N.C.) doubled to right center. Neal moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by junior first baseman Josh Benton (Gold Hill, N.C.).
 
The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior outfielder Bryan Baylis (Pocomoke City, Md.) was hit by a pitch to start the sixth. Neal plated Baylis with an RBI double. Neal moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by junior designated hitter Jay Barnes (Strasburg, Va.).
 
Indian junior right-hander Matt Cote (Orleans, Ind.) picked up the pitching win with 3 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Cote is 4-3 overall on the season. Yow (4-5 overall) took the tough-luck loss. In 8 1/3 innings, Yow allowed four earned runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked none.
 
Game #2 - Wingate 6, Newberry 4 (eight innings)
Wingate broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth, scoring two runs with two outs to pick up the extra innings victory. Bulldog freshman outfielder Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, N.C.) started the two-out rally with an infield single. Senior third baseman Tim Bowman (Winston-Salem, N.C.) followed with a single to put runners on first and third.
 
Freshman pinch-hitter Jerome Henley (Carrboro, N.C.) walked on four pitches to load the bases. On the next pitch, Newberry senior lefty Pete Stuppiello (Gilbert, S.C.) hit Baylis with a pitch to score Siega-Riz. Baylis was hit by a pitch three times Saturday. He leads Wingate with 13 hit-by-pitches this season. Neal gave Wingate a big insurance run with an RBI single to score Bowman.
 
The Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead with two runs each in the second and third innings. In the Wingate second, Siega-Riz had an RBI single and Bowman contributed an RBI sacrifice fly. In the third frame, Wingate junior outfielder Brent Simpson (Wadesboro, N.C.) tripled with one out. Barnes singled and moved to second on a wild pitch to put runners on third and second.
 
Benton reached on an RBI fielder�s choice to score Simpson and move Barnes to third. Sophomore designated hitter Dustin Hurdle (Burlington, N.C.) hit an RBI single to score Barnes.
 
Newberry scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut Wingate�s lead to 4-3. The big hit in the Indian fifth was a two-RBI single by senior third baseman Brandon Manasa (Miami, Fla.).
 
The Indians tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, sophomore catcher Curt Marshall (Rock Hill, S.C.) singled. One out later, Marshall moved to second on an errant pick-off attempt. Keefe laced an RBI single to left field to score Marshall.
 
Hurdle, Siega-Riz and Bowman had two hits each for the Bulldogs in game two. Six players had one RBI each. Marshall led the Indian offense with a three-for-four performance. He had one RBI.
 
Wingate senior left-hander Ryan DeFaber (Charlotte, N.C.) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the victory. DeFaber is 5-1 overall on the season. He gave up one run on two hits. DeFaber struck out two and walked three.
 
Stuppiello (1-4 overall) took the loss for the Indians. In 7 2/3 innings, he gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits. Stuppiello struck out five and walked one.

Game 3 - Wingate 17, Newberry 7
       
The Bulldogs got started quickly with four runs in the first inning on an RBI double from junior catcher Jay Barnes (Strasburg, Va.) and a two-run double from junior first baseman Josh Benton (Gold Hill, N.C.). Sophomore designated hitter Dustin Hurdle (Burlington, N.C.) added an RBI single.
 
Wingate went right back to work in the second inning when junior outfielder Brent �Bruiser� Simpson (Wadesboro, N.C.) hit a bases loaded single to drive in a run. Senior third baseman Tim Bowman (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a two-run double, and freshman shortstop Michael Parker (Snow Camp, N.C.) added a two-run triple to help the Bulldogs build a 12-0 lead after two innings.
 
Newberry got on the board in the fourth inning when freshman outfielder Joel Keefe (Andover, Mass.) and junior outfielder Carlos Pupo (Boynton Beach, Fla.) notched back-to-back doubles top plate the first run. Junior first baseman Matthew Webb (Cheraw, S.C.) and junior catcher Brandon Gardner (Gaffney, S.C.) each added an RBI double in the inning.
 
Newberry inched closer in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Pupo again doubled to score Keefe. Webb also recorded an RBI single in the fifth. The Indians added their sixth unanswered run in the sixth inning to cut the Bulldog lead to 12-6.

Wingate responded in the seventh inning with five runs, highlighted by an RBI triple from freshman pitcher Brian Karcewski (Downingtown, Pa.) and two-run home run from freshman outfielder Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, N.C.). The home run was the third of the year for Siega-Riz.
 
For the Indians, Pupo was three-for-five with two doubles and two RBI. Junior shortstop Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) and Webb added two RBI each.
 
Karcewski recorded the win in relief for the Bulldogs to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. Senior pitcher Jared Locke (Inman, S.C.) fell to 0-4 with the loss.
