Carson-Newman takes third game from Newberry, 13-1
Sunday, March 12, 2006

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -  The Carson-Newman Eagles baseball team scored 13 runs and held the Newberry Indians to only three hits as it won 13-1 Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

With Sundays win, the Eagles sweep the three-game series with the Indians, the second consecutive weekend C-N has taken three games from a conference foe. Carson-Newman improves to 19-7, 6-0 in the conference. Newberry falls to 6-21-1, 0-6 in conference play.

Nick Achberger (Clinton, S.C.) doubled to right field to score Adam Kefauver (Madisonville, Tenn.) in the Eagles second inning and that was the only run for either team through the first five innings of the game.

But things would change quickly for Carson-Newman in the sixth inning as they exploded for eight runs to push their advantage to 9-0. The big hits for the Eagles came off the bats of Jim Doran (Newton, N.J.) who had a two-run double as well as doubles by Derrick Calkin (Maryville, Tenn.) and Jonathan McMahon (Charlotte, N.C.).

Newberry registered its run in the bottom of the sixth inning when a C-N error put Kris Garcia (Miami, Fla.) on base at first and allowed Brandon Manasa (Miami, Fla.) to score from third.

The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning when Kefauver drove in Brandon Burchfield (Maryville, Tenn.) and Langdon Potts (Jefferson City, Tenn.) with a double to left field. Joe Kugler (Cleveland, Tenn.) singled to left to bring Kefauver home and the final run of the game came in the ninth when Calkin reached first base on an Indian error and E.T. McCreary (Rockwood, Tenn.) scored from third to produce the 13-1 final.

The Eagles play at Pfeiffer on March 14 and 15 at 2 p.m. each day. Newberry plays at Catawba on March 18 at 3 p.m.
