KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Newberry College put together fine performances in the field as well as the plate Sunday, downing Wingate 5-1 on the final day of the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Tournament. Newberry improves to 6-13-1, while Wingate drops to 5-12
Both teams had a 1-2 record at the tournament.
Chris Rahal (Vero Beach, Fla.) doubled in the second inning and came home on a fielding error. Brandon Manasa (Miami, Fla.) singled, stole second, and moved to third on Nick Martin's sacrifice bunt. Rahal went to work again, doubling to score Manasa and Jimmy Bertleson (Miami, Fla.) who was hit by a pitch. The two runs in the third gave Newberry a 3-0 edge.
Wingate's Bryan Baylis tripled in the bottom of the fourth and came home on Josh Benton's groundout. The Indians responded back with a run apiece in the fifth and sixth. Rahal batted in the fifth-inning run, and Curt Marshall (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) successfully pulled off a two-out double steal of home and second, respectively.
Pete Stuppiello (Gilbert, S.C.) recorded his first decision of the season, allowing two hits and a run in seven innings. Apart from the scoring in the fourth, Wingate got no further than first base all day. Wingate pitcher Chris Alfonso threw six innings and was tagged with the loss, dropping him to 0-3.
Newberry goes to Gaffney, S.C., to tangle with Limestone Tuesday at 2. The Indians won the previous meeting, 9-6, six days ago.
