Saturday, February 25, 2006

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Newberry College baseball team made several rallies, but Presbyterian College was able to hold on to a 6-0 lead for a 10-8 win Saturday in the preseason SAC tournament in Kannapolis, N.C. Newberry drops to 5-12-1 overall, while the Blue Hose improve to 8-7 on the season.

The Blue Hose got off to an early start with a sacrifice fly by Russell Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) which was followed by an RBI single by Nick Hoffner (Ellicot City, Md.) to make it 2-0. Presbyterian added to their lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout and a run scoring single by Matt Bodie (Aiken, S.C.) to make it a four run game.

Presbyterian made it 6-0 in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by Hoffner. Newberry answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run single by Jimmy Bertelson (Miami, Fla.). Two batters later Chris Rahal (Vero Beach, Fla.) doubled to left to plate two more runs, making it 6-4.

Presbyterian came right back in the seventh when Robinson hit a two-run homerun to right field, his second of the year. The Blue Hose would add another run in the inning to make it 9-4. In the eighth Presbyterian added their final run of the game on an RBI single by Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.).

Newberry rallied back in the eight on an RBI double by Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.). The Indians would also score on an error, and a bunt single by Brandon Manasa (Miami, Fla.) to cut the lead to three. The Indians added one more run in the ninth on a Joel Keefe (Andover, Mass.) RBI double. Newberry got the tying run to the plate but Blue Hose closer Daniel Hill (Matthews, N.C.) induced Martin into a groundout to end the game.

Parker Suit (Macon, Ga.) got the win for Presbyterian to improve to 1-2 on the season. Jayme Thomas (Clinton, S.C.) dropped to 0-1 for the Indians. Hill picked up his third save of the season. Hoffner led the way offensively going four-for-five with three RBI. Robinson was two-for-four with a homerun and four RBI. Lyda was three-for-three with three runs scored. Bertelson led Newberry going two-for-five with two RBI, Rahal had two RBI as well for the Indians.
