Newberry throttles #18 Francis Marion, 7-1
Tuesday, February 21, 2006

FLORENCE, S.C. Sophomore left fielder Nick Martin went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs to lead Newberry College to a 7-1 non-conference win over 18th-ranked Francis Marion University, Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 21) in baseball action.

Newberry (4-11-1) pounded out 12 hits, while sophomore right-hander Will Folk (1-0) shut out the Patriots (7-4) for eight innings.

Folk struck out five, scattered eight hits, and only an RBI-double by FMU pinch-hitter Bryan Brown with two outs in the ninth inning eliminated his shutout.

No Patriot hitter had multiple hits, and sophomore outfielder Justin Greene (0-for-4) had his 10-game hitting streak stopped.

Newberry took a 2-0 advantage in the fourth frame off FMU lefty Michael Williams (0-3) when  Martin stroked a one-out, two-run single.

The Indians scored four times in the eighth inning.  Martin and Matthew Webb delivered run-scoring singles, Tyler Manasa drew a bases-loaded walk, and Gray Berryhill hit an RBI groundout.  Anthony Dillenger accounted for the final Newberry run with a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Berryhill, Dillenger, Webb, and Chris Rahal all had two hits for the Indians.

Francis Marion was to have played at Barton College on Wednesday, but that game has been pushed back to Thursday at 2 p.m. because of the threat of bad weather on Wednesday.  Newberry travels to Limestone College on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. contest.
