Indians win home opener, 5-2; split with Anderson
Sunday, February 19, 2006

NEWBERRY, S.C. - If theres one thing that Newberry College head baseball coach Bob Rikeman knows, it is how to make a good first impression.  Hes done it twice already this year in his debut season with the Indians.

He directed the Indians to a season-opening win over USC Upstate on the first of February, and today his team won its home opener over Anderson University, 5-2.  Anderson (5-9) claimed the second half of the doubleheader, 8-1, to leave the season series knotted at two games apiece.

Newberry (3-11-1) opened scoring in the first game, getting back-to-back doubles from Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) and Joel Keefe (Andover, Mass.).  Dillenger came in off Keefes shot to center, and Keefe scored when Brandon Manasa (Miami, Fla.) fired a ground ball that was too much for Andersons second baseman Tony Graham (Abbeville, S.C.) to handle.

The Trojans tied the affair at two in the fourth inning off a two-run dinger from Blair Carson (Anderson, S.C.).  The Indians went to work again in the sixth, loading the bases with two singles and a fielders choice and only one out.  A wild pitch by Nate Miller (Canal Fulton, Ohio) moved the runners around.  Dillenger and Keefe went to work again, each singling to drive in the fourth and fifth runs, respectively.

Matt Cote (Orleans, Ind.) picked up the win for Newberry to improve his record to 2-2.  Miller took the loss for the Trojans.

Game two was all Anderson University, as the Trojans scored in all but two innings, doing the most damage in the fourth.  Second baseman Cody Nye (Saluda, S.C.) led off with a single, and moved around the bases via a steal, a balk, and a passed ball.  Nye was three-for-three in the nightcap.  John Mac White (Saluda, S.C.) was hit by a pitch, and scored off throwing errors on two different pickoff attempts at first.  Graham and Jonathan Pitts (Easley, S.C.) had RBI singles in the inning to create the other two runs.

Anderson starting pitcher Aaron Griffith (Greenville, S.C.) allowed only two hits in six innings and permitted no Indian past second base. Two Trojan double plays helped his cause.  Cory Welch (Anderson, S.C.) got Andersons final three outs, but blew the shutout when Matt Webb (Cheraw, S.C.) sent his 1-1 offering over the left center field wall for his first round-tripper of the year.

Danny Bertleson (Miami, Fla.) took the loss for his only decision this year.

Newberry travels to Florence for a 3 p.m. start against Francis Marion on Tuesday.  Anderson plays at Carson-Newman starting one hour earlier.
