Castellano's no-hitter gives Newberry 3-0 win over Anderson in nightcap
Saturday, February 18, 2006

ANDERSON, S.C. Newberrys Ernie Castellano pitched a no-hitter in the second game to give the Indians a 3-0 victory and a split of a non-conference doubleheader at a cool and damp Anderson Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.

In the first seven-inning game, Anderson scored 10 runs in the first four innings and went on to beat the Indians, 14-7.

Castellano, freshman from Homestead, Fla., recorded three strikeouts and walked two. He pitched out of a jam in the fifth when an error and a hit batter put Anderson runners on second and third with two outs. But Castellano struck out Tony Graham to end the inning.

The Indians scored two runs in the third inning. The big hit in the inning was a two-out, two-run double by Carlos Pupo.

Newberry finished the second game with nine hits.

In the first game, Jonathan Pitts was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and was a triple shy of the cycle and Jessie Whiteside was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and was a single shy of the cycle to lead the Trojans to a 14-7 victory.

Anderson scored three runs in the first on an RBI single by Pitts and sacrifice flies by Blair Carson and John Mac White.

Anderson added to its 3-0 lead with seven more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Whiteside hit a home run, Graham had an RBI double, Pitts had a two-run double, and then Whiteside came back to the plate provided a two-run double.

Whiteside, a junior from Beaufort, S.C., capped Andersons three-run sixth with a two-run triple.

Both teams finished the first game with 10 hits. No Newberry player had more than one hit in the first game.

Desmond Robson picked up the victory for Anderson in the second game. He allowed seven hits and three runs in five innings.

Anderson is now 4-8, while Newberry stands at 2-10-1.

The same two teams will play another doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Newberry High School.  The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.  Admission is a $5 suggested donation to be collected by the American Cancer Society at the gate.
