Newberry drops tough 4-1 game to Saint Leo
Sunday, February 12, 2006

SAINT LEO, Fla. Indians second baseman Jimmy Bertelson tagged Saint Leo pitcher Peter Martinez with his first earned run of the season as Bertelson sent a bases empty line drive over the left field fence in the fourth inning of a seven inning game, but that was the only run Newberry would score as Martinez held Newberry to two hits and struck out eight Indians in a 4-1 Saint Leo victory Sunday afternoon.

Darrin Young (0-1) pitched five solid innings in the seven inning game for Newberry (1-8-1) while Danny Bertelson pitched one full inning in relief. Martinez (2-0) was credited with the win for Saint Leo (5-2).

Saint Leo took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Lions catcher Ricky Nolan doubled to left off Young and was eventually driven in by Greg Whitemore.

Saint Leo would take a 2-1 lead before Rhett Taylor hit a two-run homerun in the fifth to give the Lions a 4-1 advantage over Newberry.

The second and only other base hit Newberry would record would occur in the seventh as Tyler Manasa recorded his first hit of the year, a single up the middle. Manasa was thrown out on the next play though as Jimmy Bertelson grounded into a double play.

Newberry next travels to Augusta State on Tuesday, Feb. 14 as the Road Warriors campaign continues.
