Newberry Baseball falls at Saint Leo, 12-4
Sunday, February 12, 2006

SAINT LEO, Fla. Newberry held Saint Leo scoreless through the first two innings of play but then gave up at least one run in every inning thereafter as the host Lions rolled to a 12-4 victory over the Indians Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Newberry (1-7-1) struggled defensively as the Indians tied a season high of four errors while Saint Leo (4-2) put up 15 hits and emptied their bench late in the game, playing 15 different position players throughout nine innings of play.

The Indians and the Lions were forced to play Sunday as inclement weather in the area postponed a game and a half of the Bob Tewksbury Classic. No. 28 Nova Southeastern and Wingate suspended their game Saturday night in the top of the fifth due to the weather with NSU leading 4-2. Nova Southeastern went on to win that game 6-2 as the two teams finished the nine-inning affair Sunday morning.

Matt Cote (1-2) is credited with the loss, pitching five complete innings and giving up eight runs off eight hits. Only five of Cotes runs were earned. Ryan Clark (2-0) records the win for Saint Leo, pitching six full innings giving up only two runs off four hits and striking out eight.

Carlos Pupo put Newberry on the board in the sixth inning as he sent a ball over the left-centerfield wall after Jimmy Bertleson reached on a walk. Pupos shot was his second home run of the season.

Newberry scored twice in the top of the ninth as Brandon Gardner, in his first action of the season, reached on base due to a fielders choice and advanced to third off a double down the left field line by Anthony Dillenger. Both Gardner and Dillenger would come around to score as the Lions catcher Eric Thompson committed his first error of the season, allowing Nick Martin to reach base and the two runs to come across the plate.

Newberry faces Saint Leo in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
