ROCK HILL, S.C. – Newberry outfielder T.J. McCord (Manning, S.C.) was named 2005 South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year for baseball, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
“We knew he we was good when he arrived here at Newberry,” said head coach Tim Medlin. “But we didn’t have any idea he would perform at the level he has.
“We expect great things from him in the future.”
This is the first SAC Freshman of the Year honor ever bestowed on a Newberry Indian in baseball.
McCord had a fine inaugural season for the Indians, as he saw action in 42 games, moving from a reserve outfielder in the beginning of the 2005 campaign, to batting in the three-hole for most of the season. McCord compiled a .338 batting average, with two home runs and 29 RBIs. He also leads the team with three triples, and hit .382 with runners in scoring position.
He was named SAC “Player of the Week” in week four of the 2005 season.
Newberry wraps up its season on April 19th, as the Indians host Augusta State University for a 6 p.m. contest at historic Kirkland Field.
