ROCK HILL, S.C. – Newberry designated hitter Dean Walker was named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Walker, a senior from Afton, Tenn., led Newberry College to a 2-1 record in the final SAC weekend series of his career against Lenoir-Rhyne. Walker hit a robust .667 (8-for-12) over the course of the weekend, while notching seven RBIs. Walker hit a two-RBI single in the final Indian at-bat of the second game, clinching a 7-6 victory for Newberry.
Walker also knocked a double in the final game of the series on Sunday, as he tied the Newberry College record for career two-baggers (45). On the season, Walker is leading the Indians in batting average (.385), hits (65), and walks (29).
Walker will finish his illustrious career at Newberry tomorrow, April 19th, as the Indians take on Augusta State University at 6 p.m. Walker, along with fellow senior Josh Page (Columbia, S.C.), will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
This is the second “Player of the Week” award bestowed on a Newberry Indian this year, as freshman T.J. McCord (Manning, S.C.) was honored in week four.
The SAC player and pitcher of the week are selected by the conference’s eight sports information directors.
