Newberry splits doubleheader with Anderson College
Tuesday, March 8, 2005

NEWBERRY, S.C. Newberry split a doubleheader with visiting Anderson College Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 4-1, but dropping the nightcap to the Trojans by a score of 10-3.  Newberry is now 7-13 on the season.

The doubleheader with Anderson College marks the end of a six-game homestand for the Indians.  Newberry finished with a 1-5 record during the stretch.

In the first game, Newberry snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating Anderson 4-1.

Indian starting pitcher Pete Stuppiello (Gilbert, S.C.) dazzled the Trojans with a complete game, four-hit performance.  With the win, Stuppiello leveled his record at 2-2.

It wasnt smooth sailing in the beginning for Stuppiello, as Anderson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Trojan leadoff man Caleb Owen (Westminster, S.C.) singled through the left side of the infield to start the game.  After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Anderson designated hitter Donavon Schmidt (Hilton Head, S.C.) launched a single to right field to bring home Owen.

Newberry came roaring back in their half of the second with a rare display of power.  Clark Mullins (N. Augusta, S.C.) started the inning off with a solo home run.  Then with a man on, Brandon Brown (Starr, S.C.) hit a moonshot over the left field fence to give the Indians a 3-1 lead.

It was all Stuppiello from that point on, as he only allowed two hits in the rest of the contest.  Anderson starter Nate Miller (Canal Fulton, Ohio) picked up the loss for the Trojans.

The Trojan bats came alive in the second game, as Anderson spanked Newberry by a score of 10-3.  The Trojans hammered three different Newberry pitchers for a total of 15 hits.

Anderson again started quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.  With men on second and third, Trojan third baseman Jonathan Pitts (Easley, S.C.) tattooed a pitch by Newberry starter Travis Howard (Columbia, S.C.) over the fence in left.  Pitts went 2-for-4 in the contest.

Howard (0-2), making his second start for the Indians, only lasted 1.1 innings while giving up four earned runs.

Owen went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Trojans.  Anderson right fielder Cody Nye (Saluda, S.C.) had a stellar game offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Both Mullins and T.J. McCord (Manning, S.C.) went 2-for-4 for the Indians.

Anderson starting pitcher Aaron Griffith (Greenville, S.C.) picked up the win, going six innings and striking out four.

Newberry has a bit of break until heading to Tennessee to do battle with SAC rival Carson-Newman on Saturday.  First pitch is slated for noon.
