Newberry baseball upset on the road at Claflin 7-6 in ten innings
Saturday, February 19, 2005

ORANGEBURG - The Newberry Indians lost a tough one on the diamond Saturday afternoon, falling in ten innings on the road at the hands of Claflin University 7-6 in Division II baseball action.  The Indians fall to 2-5 on the season heading into Tuesdays home opener against Francis Marion.

Early on, it looked like a walk in the park for the Indians, as they opened up the top of the first with two runs on only one hit.  After consecutive walks issued to Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) and Dean Walker (Afton, Tenn.), a single to left field by Indian third baseman Ryan Easterby (Charleston, S.C.) scored Dillenger from second.  Walker would score on a sacrifice fly to right courtesy of Newberry catcher Bruce Johnson (Morehead City, N.C.).

But Claflin would not go gently, as the Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the second when Jaime Aimar (Bowman, S.C.) scored on a dropped fly ball by Indian center fielder Jamall Kinard (Newberry, S.C.).

Newberry answered in their half of the fourth after a leadoff double by Johnson.  After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Clark Mullins (N. Augusta, S.C.), Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly by Newberry right fielder Brandon Brown (Starr, S.C.), pushing the score 3-1 in favor of Newberry.

Claflin would get runs back in the 5th and 7th to knot the score at three apiece heading into the eighth inning.  Newberry responded in their half of that inning with two runs by Easterby and Johnson, making the score 5-3.  Newberry was unable to shut the door however, as Indian hurlers Ty Rollins (Columbia, S.C.) and Will Folk (Charleston, S.C.) combined in the eighth for three walks and a hit batsman to allow one Panther to cross the plate, making the score 5-4 heading into the eighth.

Matt Webb (Cheraw, S.C.) was able to reach base in the top of the ninth on a throwing error by Claflin reliever Simeon Rhodes (Barnwell, S.C.).  Webb proceeded to steal second and score on a Dillenger single to left, giving the Indians a 6-4 cushion.

But Claflin was able to take advantage of a Webb error and three passed balls by Indian pitcher Jared Locke (Inman, S.C.) to push two runs across in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at six and forcing the extra frame.  It was a shaky outing to say the least for Locke (1-1), who issued two walks and hit a batter in the ninth.

After the Indians went 1-2-3 in the top of tenth, Claflin's leadoff man Eric Jordan (Walterboro, S.C.) singled to center field with two outs, but was able to reach second base on a Kinard throwing error on the relay.  In the very next at bat, Panther left fielder Dustin Walters (Bowman, S.C.) singled to left field, driving in Jordan for the game-winning RBI.

Rhodes (1-0) picked up the win Claflin by means of his three inning, three hit performance over the Indians.  Locke took the loss for Newberry.

There's nothing left to do but put this three game losing streak behind them, as Newberry plays its home opener against always-tough Francis Marion at Kirkland Field at 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
