Tuesday, February 8, 2005

Spartanburg, SC -  On the strength of two big innings, Newberry defeated USC Upstate by a score of 9-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Harley Park.  Newberry evens their record at 2-2 on the season.  USC Upstate falls to 3-1 and will host Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

Both teams went scoreless through two complete innings.  In the third inning, Newberry got back-to-back homeruns by Matthew Webb (Cheraw, S.C.) and Jamall Kinard (Newberry, S.C.) to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Spartans tacked on a run in the bottom of the third when John Caddell reached base on a bunt single and then advanced to third on a throwing error by pitcher Jared Locke (Inman, S.C.).  Brian Discordia's sacrifice fly to right field scored Caddell to cut the Newberry lead to 2-1.

Newberry had their biggest inning of the game in the fourth inning, scoring four runs.  Clark Mullins (N. Augusta, S.C.) and Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) led off the inning with base hits.  Mullins then scored on a RBI single by Kinard to make the score 3-1.  Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) came up and slapped a single in left field scoring Martin to make the score 4-1.  Bruce Johnson (Morehead City, S.C.) then singled to right field scoring both Kinard and Dillenger to make the score 6-1.

The Spartans clawed back into the game in the fifth inning, scoring three runs.  Jim Kais hit a ground-rule double down the right field line.  Discordia and Bret Hansen then walked to load the bases.  Kyle Bowley stepped to the plate and delivered a two-out, two-strike base-hit to right field to score Kais and Discordia.  Hansen then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-4.

In the Spartan seventh, Hansen doubled to left center and then scored on a fielding error by Dillenger to cut the Newberry lead to one at 6-5.

In the Newberry eighth, Mullins had a leadoff walk and was then sacrificed to second on a bunt.  Webb then doubled advancing Mullins to third.  After Kinard was intentionally walked, Dillenger then tripled in the left-centerfield gap to clear the bases to make the score 9-5.

Kinard was 3 for 4 with two RBI's and Dillenger was 2 for 5 with four RBI's for Newberry.  Caddell was 2 for 5 and Bowley was 1 for 5 with two RBI's for the Spartans.

Locke (1-0) picked up the win for Newberry.  James Dalton (0-1) took the loss for the Spartans.
