ROCK HILL, S.C. – Wingate’s Josh Benton and Newberry’s Stuart Kay were named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, league officials announced today.

Kay was the winning pitcher in head coach Tim Medlin’s 350th career victory. Newberry went 2-0 on the week, with the 6-2, 200-pound senior making contributions in each game. He limited #13 Francis Marion to one hit over five innings in the 6-0 shutout. Offensively, Kay had an RBI in each game, including the winning RBI over Claflin.

Benton (Gold Hill, N.C.) had a big week for the Bulldogs. In a 19-8 win at number five Florida Southern College Saturday, the freshman outfielder was four-for-four with a double, a home run and five RBI. In a tough 7-5 loss at number 31 Pfeiffer Tuesday, Benton hit a grand slam (his first home run as a collegian) in the eighth inning. For the week, the 6-0, 195 lb. right-hander hit .533 with two doubles, two home runs and nine RBI. He also earned five walks. On the season, Benton is hitting .421 (second on the team) with two doubles, two home runs and nine RBI without an error in 12 chances this year.

The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is voted on by the league's eight sports information directors.
