Francis Marion exacts revenge, wins 16-0 over NC
Wednesday, March 31, 2004

FLORENCE, SC - Freshman catcher Michael Ward hit two home runs and drove in six runs to lead Francis Marion University to a 16-0 non-conference win over Newberry College, Wednesday evening (March 31) in collegiate baseball action.

FMU (19-14) rapped out a season-high 23 hits, a total that is three shy of the school record (26) set in 1980. Newberry drops to 15-20.

The Patriots opened the game with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. A seeing-eye single and two infield hits loaded the bases with no outs. Luke Ogletree then reached on an error by Newberry shortstop Anthony Dillenger that allowed two runs to score. Freshman Nick Stewart followed with a walk, reloading the bases, and Ward smacked the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a grand slam home run that put FMU up 6-0.

Ward, who finished the night three-for-five, added a two-run homer in the sixth frame. Sophomore shortstop Jason Weaver celebrated his 21st birthday with a four-for-six performance, while senior designated hitter Kenneth Yaeger recorded the first four-hit game of his career (four-for-five). Weaver scored twice and drove in three runs.

FMU first baseman Luke Ogletree went two-for-six with two runs scored and two RBIs.

FMU junior right-hander Chas Dobes allowed only three hits in six inning to up his season mark to 4-1. Three FMU relievers combined to retire the last nine Newberry batters in order.

Newberry southpaw Pete Stuppiello (1-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs (six earned) in only 2.2 innings.

Stuart Kay, Dean Walker, and Ryan Easterby recorded the only Newberry hits.

FMU will travel to Columbus, Ga., this weekend for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series with Columbus State University, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m., while Newberry plays at Augusta State University, Thursday at 3 p.m.
