NEWBERRY, S.C.- Back-to-back errors in the second inning proved costly for Limestone College at Kirkland Field Tuesday night. Newberry College exploited those errors with three runs in the inning on their way to a 6-5 victory. The Indians improve to 19-27 while the Saints fall to 25-21.
Newberry's first two batters in the second were walked, and reached scoring position on Anthony Dillenger's (Gaffney, S.C.) sacrifice bunt. The pair then scored off a Limestone fielding error. The next batter, Matt Webb (Cheraw, S.C), got to first off another Saints' error, scoring Ryan Easterby (Charleston, S.C), who reached on the first error.
In the sixth frame, Easterby gave Newberry its fifth score off a single that plated Dillenger. Gilmore Stevens (Edgefield, S.C.) singled in the eighth, stole second, and scored off Kay's double to increase the Indians' lead to two runs going into the ninth.
Saints right fielder Darius Pullen (Shelby, N.C.) doubled down the third base line to drive in shortstop Travis Clary (Gaffney, S.C.), and moved to third on the ensuing groundout. With Limestone trailing by one run with one away, Newberry reliever Chris Griffin (Cayce, S.C.) entered the contest. Griffin struck out B.J. Bowling (Shelby, N.C.), then caused Richmond Lutz (Shelby, N.C.) to ground out to second to preserve the win.
Limestone catcher David Wise (Lincolnton, N.C.) tied the game at three-all with a solo homer in the fourth. Clark Mullins (North Augusta, S.C.) put the home team back on top in the next inning, batting in Stuart Kay (Greer, S.C.). The Saints evened the score when Clary hit a liner to right field to score Tyler Midgett (Summerville, S.C.).
Newberry pitcher Brent Rembert (Sumter, S.C.) gave up only two runs and collected his first win of the year. Griffin picked up his second save of the year for Newberry while Drew Lovelace (Chesnee, S.C) was the losing pitcher for Limestone.
