Janet Parkman Jordan

YEAR INDUCTED 2013
SPORTS Basketball

A member of the first women's basketball team at Newberry College, Janet Parkman helped pave the way for the future of Newberry women's basketball.

A native of Sumter, Parkman scored four points as she helped lead the Indians to the first victory in school history as Newberry topped Whitmire High School 35-15.

During her junior season at Newberry, Parkman served as the veteran presence on a young Indians roster. Janet aided the Indians with what was referenced as, “her finest performance of the season”, scoring 11 points as she helped lead Newberry to a 102-73 victory over Warren Wilson. The Indians' victory over Warren Wilson remains one of the highest scoring games by a Newberry women's basketball team in school history.

At the conclusion of her junior season, Newberry hosted the Newberry College Women's Invitational Basketball Tournament. After a first round victory over Coker, the Indians matched up with Converse College in the championship game. The Newberry Observer noted that Parkman sparked her team in the Indians' 65-49 win over Coker.

The championship game saw Parkman net eight points and snag 14 rebounds as the Indians picked up the first trophy in program history as Newberry knocked off Converse 67-43.

Individual recognition was soon to follow for Janet, as she was honored at the Newberry College Athletic Banquet by being named Most Improved Player for the Women's Basketball team.

Janet Parkman Jordan now serves as secretary of the Newberry College Letterman's Club.
