When hired as Director of Athletics a year ago, I made a promise - a promise to never compromise when it came to our student-athletes and their overall success. I did not want to sacrifice the well-being of our student-athletes or their success in the classroom for their achievements on the playing field. I also did not want to lose focus of why we are here – to ensure the education of our students and foster future leaders.
Last academic year, we witnessed what can happen when you don’t compromise these values: all-around excellence.
Across all sports, 195 Newberry student-athletes had a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better. Eleven had a perfect 4.0, and we had five Academic All-Americans.
The Wolves’ success in the classroom this year was matched only by their performances on the field and courts. Our football team won the 2016 South Atlantic Conference football championship, our wrestling team won the Eastern College Athletic Conference crown, and our men’s golf team advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships and finished fifth nationally.
Our baseball and softball teams had great years and both made it to the winner’s bracket in the conference tournament. Both men’s and women’s basketball teams had winning seasons, as did our men’s and women’s tennis teams. Volleyball advanced to the conference semifinals. Both men’s and women’s soccer teams improved from the year before, as did our field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams.
I could not be more proud of the dedication and commitment these young men and women show every day to shine as students, as athletes, and as the next generation of world leaders. We will strive to continue to win championships, excel academically, and be a model of what NCAA Division II athletics should look like.
I cannot thank our alumni, donors, fans and my staff enough for their continued support and passion for these student-athletes and the mission of Newberry Athletics.
I look forward to celebrating another exciting year of uncompromising success.
Let’s go, Wolves!
