NEWBERRY - Head athletic trainer John Lopez has announced the hiring of Matthew Cannella as an assistant athletic trainer.

"Matthew Cannella brings us another great opportunity to enhance the care of the athletes here at Newberry College," said Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine John Lopez. "His preparation to become an athletic trainer has been honed by some of the finest mentors in the profession, and we are happy to welcome him to Newberry."

For the past year, Cannella worked as a medical resident therapist with Cirque De Soleil. He served as the primary athletic trainer for both "MindFreak Live!" and Cirque De Soleil at Sea, and the assistant athletic trainer for "O" at the Bellagio. His responsibilities included providing evidence based injury evaluations, assisting in injury treatment and prevention, leading weekly meetings, and performing daily show coverage and support.

Besides Cirque De Soleil, Cannella brings NFL experience after being with the Detroit Lions during the 2015-16 season. He also provided assistance to the New York Giants as a student intern in 2012.

Cannella graduated from West Virginia University in 2015 with a master's degree in athletic training where he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for two years. During his time with West Virginia he was the head athletic trainer for North Marion High School.

He received his bachelor's degree in athletic training from Kean University in 2013.
