Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach
Newberry College head men’s lacrosse coach Nick Cotter has announced the hiring of Joe Wilson as assistant coach.
Wilson comes to Newberry after serving as volunteer assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s. During his stint with the Mountaineers, he was responsible for assisting in day-to-day operations: equipment management, recruiting database, film exchanges and breakdown, and other daily duties for games and practices. Wilson worked with CARA hours and ensured eligibility for the men’s lacrosse team and kept the program NCAA compliant.
Wilson had a three-year stint as head coach at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, N.C., where he guided the Knights to 28 wins and a 13-2 conference record while making playoff appearances all three years, including a pair of semifinal berths and one finals appearance. Wilson led the team to its first-ever bid to the NAIA National Tournament and first-ever conference regular season championship in 2016.
He started his career at Sewanee: The University of the South where he helped build a young program as an assistant coach. In 2012, Wilson was the offensive coordinator for Western Reserve Academy (Ohio), helping lead the team to a 12-win season. As an Assistant at King's College (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) for the 2013 season, Wilson aided in the team's 10-4 season and advanced to the MAC Freedom Conference Tournament Championship.
“I am beyond thrilled to welcome Joe to the Newberry College family," stated Cotter. "I had the pleasure of interviewing a number of qualified applicants, but I knew Joe was the right fit for Newberry. Joe’s strong background will be a tremendous asset to our program and he will help assist, direct and develop our players into better student-athletes and people.
"Joe brings a wealth of knowledge in all divisions but a most recent stint at division one Mount Saint Mary’s where he worked with goalies, faceoff and defense. Joe has a strong recruiting network in the Southeast and Midwest."
Wilson graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2008 with a Bachelor's degree in Communication. He held positions as the vice president, president and captain of the club lacrosse team. He recently received his Master's degree in College Athletic Administration from Coker.
