Bryant Blanton was added to the football coaching staff during the summer of 2017 after spending three years running Newberry's equipment operations and served as the team's kicking coach in 2017.
Newberry finished the season 11-for-16 on field goal attempts, including making kicks of 45 and 49 yards. The Wolves also punted 56 times for a 39.5-yard average. Each Newberry kicker won a conference weekly award: a SAC award by Shea Rodgers, an ECAC accolade by Kevin Weber. Rodgers made all of his kicks and had an impressive punting average at Lenoir-Rhyne while Weber nailed what was at the time Newberry's longest field goal in 17 years against Virginia University of Lynchburg.
He was a punter and wide receiver for the Indians in 2006 and 2007, winning the South Atlantic Conference Championship in Newberry's 10-win season of 2006.
A 2016 inductee into the Newberry Athletic Hall of Fame, Blanton's most significant accomplishment came as part of Newberry's wrestling team. He won the 2010 Division II national championship at 184 poounds with a 41-8 record, has two of Newberry's three 40-win seasons in school history, and holds the top three spots for most pins in a season.
His 143 wins and 64 falls are both Newberry records and he is one of only four Newberry wrestlers to qualify for four Division II national tournaments. In duals action, Newberry went 75-16-1 with two NWCA National Duals runner-up finishes in his time on the mat.
