Jarvis Littlejohn came to Newberry to coach the defensive line in the spring of 2016 after recently completing his third season on the Tusculum coaching staff in 2015.
Littlejohn's first season with the Newberry program was one of the most successful campaigns in school history, with Newberry winning the SAC championship and earning a No. 2 seed in the 2016 NCAA Division II Football Championship.
The Newberry line boasted defensive end Jamarcus Henderson, named a second team All-American by the Football Gazette. Henderson and defensive tackle Jimmy Holmes were both named first team all-SAC and second tem all-region. Henderson ranked first in the SAC in both sacks (9.5) and tackles for loss (22), while fellow defensive end Jaquille Oden was fourth in the league in both categories (seven sacks, 18 TFL).
Ten different defensive lineman recorded at least half a sack in 2016, underscoring the depth of the unit. Newberry set school records with 10 sacks and 14 tackles for loss against Carson-Newman and recorded at least two tackles for loss in every game of the season. The line was part of a defense that finished the year ranked 10th in Division II in passing defense, giving up 166.6 yards per game. Newberry also attained top-25 national rankings in passing efficiency defense (21st - 108.88), scoring defense (22nd - 20.1 points per game), total defense (23rd - 316.1 yards per game), and sacks per game (25th - 2.92).
Littlejohn, who starred on the Tusculum gridiron from 2005-08, served as the Pioneers' running back coach in 2013 and has was responsible for the outside linebackers in 2014 and 2015.
The 2008 Tusculum graduate returned to the Greeneville campus after serving the four years on the coaching staff at Gaffney (S.C.) High School. While at Gaffney, he helped the Indians to a 45-12 record while capturing the 2012 state championship and a pair of region titles (2011 & 2012).
He served as Gaffney's freshmen basketball coach for four years, leading the program to 15 wins per season, including a perfect 20-0 record in 2009.
Prior to Gaffney, he served as a graduate assistant football coach at Delta State under head coach Ron Roberts. While at the Cleveland, Miss. school, he assisted with the linebackers along with other duties with the program.
During his playing career at Tusculum, he earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors twice (2007, 2008) and was a consensus All-Region linebacker in his senior campaign (2008) where he finished with 105 tackles, which were the third most in school history.
He served as team captain of that 2008 squad that captured the SAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the first time in school history. That squad finished the year with a 9-4 record, advanced to the region semifinals and ended the year ranked 16th in the nation. He earned All-Region distinction by Daktronics (CoSIDA) and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette.
Littlejohn accounted for 209 career tackles, which are 14th in Tusculum history. His five career fumble recoveries are sixth in TC history, including his three in 2008 (T4th in TC history).
In 2007, he led the Pioneers in tackles, recording 85 stops, including a career-high 17 against Mars Hill (T7th-most in TC history). The Gaffney native posted 11 tackles for loss in 2007, recovered two fumbles and forced a pair. For his 17-tackle effort against Mars Hill University, he was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week and D2football.com National Defensive Player of the Week.
While a student-athlete at Tusculum, he also served as a counselor and mentor to disadvantaged youth with the Boys and Girls Club.
Littlejohn and his fiance, Latoya Lane of Knoxville, Tenn., are the parents of two sons, Isaiah and Micah.
