INDIANAPOLIS - Newberry College senior Matthew Campbell has been selected to compete as an individual in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Men's Golf Super Regional on May 7-9 at the Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C.
A total of 20 teams and eight individuals will play 54 holes over three days for the chance at a berth in the NCAA Division II National Championships, which will be held at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky., on May 15-19. The top five teams and top two individuals not on those teams at the regionals will advance to the national tournament.
Campbell is the 2012 South Atlantic Conference champion, having shot a 1-under par 215 on the same Rock Barn course on April 16-17. He earned second team all-SAC honors after the regular season to become Newberry's second-ever four-time all-SAC honoree. He was also the 2011 SAC Golfer of the Year.
He is tied for the SAC record for most career rounds played at 104 entering regional play. He has a season stroke average of 72.6 in 28 rounds played, with a career stroke average of 73.7. He is just the third Newberry player to compete in four NCAA Regional tournaments in his collegiate career. Campbell is on pace to finish in the top three in the history of the South Atlantic Conference in career scoring average alongside former teammates Daniel Stanley (72.8) and Ben Lown (73.8).
