NEWBERRY, S.C. – Kofi Kufuor notched his team-high fifth goal of the season, but the Ghanaian’s tally was not enough as the Wolves dropped their conference match 3-1 to visiting Catawba.
In a physical match that saw eight yellow cards, Catawba (6-7-0, 2-3-0 South Atlantic Conference) found the back of the net in the 7th minute as Ezra Ntirugelegwa got a foot on a loose ball in front of the goal mouth and slipped it in for his second goal of the season.
Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) and the Wolves (5-7-0, 1-4-0 SAC) bounced back in the 13th minute when sophomore Joao Delgado (Atlanta, Ga.) took the ball to the edge of the 18-yard box. Delgado maintained possession and threaded a pass to Kufuor who finished the play from just outside the six-yard box.
Catawba’s Carson Smith scored off a corner kick in the 24th minute on a diving header delivered by Corey Faughnan. In the 36th minute Faughnan provided his second assist of the match when he sent a free kick to Adam Kurdi who headed the ball past Newberry goalkeeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago).
Newberry outshot Catawba 15-13 in the match. Johnson recorded seven saves in the match.
The Wolves return to the pitch on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they play host to Lenoir-Rhyne.
