Newberry pair moves on to Academic All-America ballot

McLEAN, Va. - Newberry College juniors Mario Rojas and Andy Vogel have been named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Three and advance to the ballot for Academic All-America status as announced Thursday.
Rojas (Miami, Fla.) holds a 3.81 grade point average in Business Administration with minors in Mathematics and Graphic Design. He is a Dean's List student and recipient of the Founders and Leadership scholarships. He is the president of Newberry's chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (Future Business Leaders of America) and is the co-founder of the Society of Undergraduate Mathematicians and a member of the Blue Key Honor Society. He has been published in the Undergraduate Research Journal for the Human Sciences for his paper on "The Evolution of Affirmative Action," while his paper on "Why negotiations tend to fail in a cross cultural milieu: The China Norway Affair" is currently under review.
On the diamond, Rojas has a 5-4 record with a 3.88 ERA in 48.2 innings pitched entering this weekend's series with No. 1 Mount Olive. His .254 opponent's batting average ranks fourth in the South Atlantic Conference and he ranks sixth amongst qualified pitchers in ERA.
Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) holds a 3.96 grade point average in Business Administration with a minor in Sport Management. He is a Dean's List student and a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society and National Leadership Honor Society.
On the field, Vogel hit .313 and is the only player on the roster who has played in all 48 games entering this weekend's series. He has a team high 56 hits with 11 doubles and 35 RBIs with 13 steals and only three errors for a .979 fielding percentage.
NCAA Division II District III includes Conference Carolinas, Peach Belt Conference and the South Atlantic Conference. Student-athletes selected for Academic All-District honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. They must possess at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
