April 20, 2012
FOREST CITY, N.C. - The sixth-seeded Newberry Wolves were eliminated from the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 14-7 loss to the second-seeded Catawba Indians at McNair Field on Friday.
Newberry's record for the season is now 19-29. The Wolves close out the season with a three-game series against regional powerhouse Mount Olive on May 6-7 at home.
The Wolves held the lead after six innings, but the Indians put up sixth runs in the seventh inning to ease away from upset-minded Newberry.
Newberry led after one inning on Albert Baur's (Philadelphia, Pa.) RBI single, but Catawba went up 2-1 in the top of the second on a two-run single by Greg Lawson. Brett Underwood hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-1 Catawba lead.
The Wolves stormed back with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Matt Gaine (Goshen, N.Y.) reached on an error to plate two runs and he was followed up by a two-run single from Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) to make it 5-3 in Newberry's favor.
Catawba scored three runs in the fifth to retake the lead, but Newberry responded in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) and a perfectly executed first-and-third delayed double steal plated Fogarile before the third out to put Newberry up 7-6.
The Indians scored on a two-out error in the sixth to tie the game before Newberry miscues allowed Catawba to score six runs in the seventh. A ninth inning run from Catawba closed out the scoring as the Wolves were unable to score in the final four innings.
Newberry seniors Rufus and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) led the Wolves at the plate with 2-for-5 days, with Rufus picking up two RBIs.
