Besio, Wolves set conference records on the way to 2012 SAC ChampionshipBesio wins SAC Tournament for second year April 17, 2012
CONOVER, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves set the South Atlantic Conference Championships record for lowest single team round on Tuesday on the way to a team record for overall team score, winning the 2012 Food Lion SAC Championship. Maria Luz Besio won medalist honors by setting the SAC record for individual championships score on Rock Barn's par 71, 5,857-yard Jackson Course. Newberry shot a 301 Tuesday to finish with a total of 919, breaking their own SAC Championships records from 2010. The Wolves also set the school record for best 54-hole score by three strokes. The Wolves finished 19 strokes ahead of second place Lincoln Memorial. Besio, the SAC Golfer of the Year, wins her third consecutive tournament this season and her second SAC Championship after winning in 2010. Her three-round total of 5-over par 218 (71-75-72) bests the SAC Championships individual record by seven strokes. Besio was also the holder of the previous record from her 2010 title, and she beat her nearest competitor in the SAC Championship by 10 strokes. She also sets the school record for a 54-hole tournament. Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) finished on the all-tournament first team, finishing in fifth place with an 18-over par 231. She shot a 1-over par 72 in Tuesday's second round. On the all-tournament second team in a tie for sixth place was Lisa Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) with a 20-over par 233. Eline Askeland (Olso, Norway) tied for 13th with a 26-over par 239. Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) finished in 33rd with a 44-over par 257. Competing as an individual, Julia Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) tied for 31st with a 42-over par 255. The Wolves will now await the decision of the NCAA to see if they will qualify for the NCAA South Super Regional Tournament. That decision will be announced on April 30. Records Broken
