CONOVER, N.C. - Newberry College's Maria Luz Besio and Lisa Brandl are in the top two spots on the leaderboard to lead the Wolves to a commanding lead after 36 holes at the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships at Rock Barn's Jackson Course on Monday.
Newberry (310-308=618, +50) has a 14 stroke lead over Lincoln Memorial entering Tuesday's final round on the par 71, 5,857-yard course.
Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is on pace to win her third consecutive tournament this season, going 72-75=147 (+5), four strokes ahead of teammate Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany) who went 79-72=151 (+9) to sit in second after one day.
Besio is the 2012 SAC Golfer of the Year and was the 2010 SAC Tournament champion as well. She and the team are on pace to challenge all existing SAC Tournament records with a good day Tuesday.
Besio's first round 72 and Brandl's second round 72 are tied for the second-best single round by an individual in SAC Championships history.
Barbara Castro (Coruna, Spain) is tied for 10th at 17-over par 159 and Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) is tied for 13th at 19-over par 161. Natalia Perez (Bogota, Colombia) is tied for 35th at 35-over par 177, and Julia Daneshfar (Trophy Club, Texas) is tied for 28th with a 28-over par 170.
The Wolves' 308 in the second round ties for the third-best round in the history of the SAC Championships, while the 310 in the first round is tied for the seventh-best round in SAC Championship history. Newberry holds six of the top 10 rounds in the tournament's history.
