Holland's 4-for-4 game not enough as Wolves fall twice to Catawba

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry softball team fell on the final day of South Atlantic Conference action in a pair of 3-1 losses to the visiting Catawba Lady Indians.

Newberry falls to 18-25 overall and 2-16 in SAC play. The Wolves will finish out the 2012 schedule tomorrow at 1 p.m. when Young Harris travels the Newberry to make up a rained out doubleheader from earlier in the season.

Game One: Catawba 3, Newberry 1
Newberry junior Kaylyn Camacho (Tampa, Fla.) tallied eight strikeouts as the Wolves fell in game one 8-1.

It was the Wolves who struck first when junior Tasia Diaz (Dowagiac, Mich.) tripled down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the third. Two pitches later junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) would double to left center to plate Diaz.

Catawba answered in the top of the fourth with one run, before scoring a pair in the top of the sixth to walk away with a 3-1 victory.

Phillips recorded the Wolves lone RBI, while sophomore Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.) joined Phillips with a double of her own.

Game Two: Catawba 3, Newberry 1
Newberry sophomore Shelby Holland was a perfect 4-for-4 as the Wolves fell 3-1 in game two to the Lady Indians.

In the second game it was Catawba that opened the scoring when with two outs Alli Justice singled to right center and scored on a Wolves error.

Catawba tallied again in the fourth, before the Wolves climbed onto the board in the bottom of the fifth.

Camacho led off the inning by being hit by a pitch before being lifted for pinch runner freshman Caitlyn Smith (Palm Harbor, Fla.). Junior Ashley Roof looked to deliver a sacrifice bunt, but a late throw to second by the Lady Indians saw both Smith and Roof advance safely.

With runners on first and second, the Wolves soon found themselves with runners on the corners as Smith was forced out at third before a throwing error allowed Roof to reach third, while Brugh found herself on first. On a hard groundout by sophomore Lindsey Workman (Aiken, S.C.), the Wolves were able to score their lone run as Roof scampered home.

Catawba added a third and final run in the top of the sixth.
