Wolves dispatch Pioneers 7-2 at Cannon Tennis CourtsMarch 29, 2012 NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry sophomore Mohammed Chakir picked up an important victory at No. 3 singles as the Wolves cruised to a 7-2 victory over Tusculum at the Cannon Tennis Courts. The Wolves (12-10, 3-4 SAC) led 2-1 after doubles action, where sophomores Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) edged their opponents from Tusculum (8-7, 2-2 SAC) 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 3 doubles junior Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) and freshman Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) won with a score of 8-2. In singles action the Wolves took a 3-1 lead as Botelho won in straight sets at No. 2. Botelho’s victory was soon followed by Chakir’s (Rabat, Morocco) victory at No. 3, which saw the sophomore drop only one game in the second set. The Wolves clinched the victory when Loveridge picked up a win in two sets at No. 4 singles. Loveridge’s straight sets victory ended before Saunders picked up an emotional three set victory at No. 1 singles. Nicolopulos wrapped up the Wolves victory with a three set victory at No. 5 securing Newberry’s 7-2 victory. Newberry hits the road for its next match, meeting Wingate on April 15.
