HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In a match that began on Saturday and was finished Monday, the Newberry men’s tennis team defeated the Michigan Tech Huskies 6-3 at the Shipyard Racquet Club opening up a week in Hilton Head on a positive note.
On Saturday the Wolves (6-6) picked up three singles victories, the first of which came at No. 1 singles as sophomore Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) took down opponent Anders Sandholm in straight sets.
Saturday also saw straight sets victories for junior Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) and sophomore David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) who won at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.
After rain washed away the remainder of the matches, the Wolves and Huskies (2-5) returned to the courts on Monday. Newberry earned one final singles point at no. 2 when sophomore Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) rebounded from a set one defeat to earn a three-set victory over Luka Stupar, in which the Brazilian won 12-straight games in the final two sets.
Newberry finished the meeting with Michigan Tech with a pair of wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At the top position, Botelho and Saunders squeaked out an 8-6 win, while at No. 2 Loveridge and sophomore Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) edged Anders Sandholm and Andrew Kremkow 9-7.
The Wolves are scheduled to meet Saint Joseph’s College on Tuesday at the Shipyard Racquet Club.
