February 25, 2012
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves have earned the fourth seed in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, as announced by the league office Saturday evening. The Wolves host fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 29, in quarterfinal action.
Newberry finished alone in fourth place in the league with a 9-9 league record. The Wolves finished the season 15-11 overall. This will be the third time Newberry has hosted quarterfinal action in Eleazer Arena. The Wolves were the fourth seed last year and fell in triple overtime to fifth-seeded Tusculum. Newberry's nine conference wins is the second most in their SAC tenure.
Lenoir-Rhyne was involved in a three-way tie for fifth place with an 8-10 league record, which is the same as Carson-Newman and Tusculum. L-R came out as the fifth seed in the tiebreaker scenarios with a 3-1 combined record versus the Eagles and Pioneers.
Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne split the season series. The Wolves won 93-80 at home in December, while the Bears won 83-81 in Hickory in February.
The winner of the Newberry/L-R game moves on to the Tarlton Center on the campus of Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, N.C., at noon Saturday against the winner of the Anderson/Catawba matchup.
Regular season champion Anderson earned the top seed and will host eighth-seeded Catawba, while second-seeded Lincoln Memorial hosts Tusculum. Wingate is the third seed and hosts Carson-Newman.
