Wolves earn first conference victory on goals by Kufuor, Delgado

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. – A two goal performance by Kofi Kufuor and a penalty shot goal by sophomore Joao Delgado earned the Newberry men’s soccer team a 3-2 victory over conference foe Wingate.

A flurry of scoring opened in the 15th minute when Newberry (5-5-0, 1-3-0 South Atlantic Conference) junior Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.) found fellow junior Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.) on a set piece. Ochoa promptly found Kufuor (Accra, Ghana) who delivered a goal off the half volley from inside the 18-yard box.

The Bulldogs (3-7-0, 1-2-0 SAC) countered five minutes later when Peron Da Silva drilled a 20th minute shot past Newberry keeper Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago).

Newberry and Wingate could only muster eight minutes before another goal was scored as a ball was misplayed by the Bulldogs straight to the feet of Kufuor. In the 28th minute Kufuor took the ball just outside the six-yard box and sent a shot across the goal mouth into the far inside netting for his second goal of the match.

The scoring continued as Delgado was fouled hard by Wingate goalkeeper Stephen Harris. Delgado bounced up and converted on the penalty attempt in the 29th minute. The comfort of a two goal lead was short lived as Da Silva notched his second goal of the match on a one time just inside the 18-yard box in the 30th minute.

The two teams battled in a physical second half that featured 19 fouls between the two teams, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The second half featured 17 shots between the two teams, 15 of which came from Wingate. Johnson remained strong in net during the second half making saves on all six shots that the Bulldogs placed on frame in the half.

Kufuor’s two goals give him four on the season, while Delgado’s tally was his third of the year. In goal Johnson recorded nine saves.

The Newberry victory was the first South Atlantic Conference win by the Wolves since October 28, 2009.

Newberry now heads to Florence, S.C. for a Saturday afternoon match against Francis Marion. The Patriots and Wolves are set to kick off at 1 p.m.
