Wolves' women place third, men fourth at Guilford XC CarnivalWhittle places 10th for women; Collier and Golay in top 10 for men September 3, 2011 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Newberry College cross country teams had an excellent showing in their first meet of the season, as the women placed third of nine teams while the men were fourth of 10 at the Guilford XC Carnival on Saturday morning. Women The finish is one of the best in women's cross country history at Newberry College, as a squad full of new faces put up great times. Rebecca Eddy (Eugene, Ore.) finished 12th in her first collegiate race with a time of 22:10, while freshman Kelley Strong (Union, S.C.) was in 18th with a time of 23:15. Ariel Strong (Cassatt, S.C.) earned a 31st place finish with a time of 25:17, while Stephanie Powell (Bakersfield, Calif.) was 33rd with a 25:39 finish. Rachel McFall (Garden City, S.C.) was 49th at 29:52. Team Results Newberry Individuals Men Nathan Collier (Weatherford, Texas) ran the 5-kilometer course in 16:48 in his collegiate debut to finish seventh individually, while Justin Golay (Springfield, Mo.) came in 10th with a time of 17:05. Alex Holshoe (Hopkins, Mich.) placed 22nd with a time of 18:32, while Austin Sorenson (Murrieta, Calif.) was 26th at 19:09. Travis Laxton (Live Oak, Fla.) placed 38th at 21:59, while Davis Bagwell (Oak Mountain, Ala.) rounded out Newberry's runners in 49th at 25:28. Team Results Newberry Individuals Both teams will be back in action on Friday evening, as the Wolves head to Due West for the Erskine Invitational. Races are set to begin at 4 p.m. |
