BLOG - The First Day....
May 30, 2010
Hello Newberry Golf Fans! I hope all of you are enjoying your Memorial Day weekend. Any other year and my blog entry would be about my admiration and respect for soldiers, past and present, and what sacrifices they made so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have as Americans. My grandfather and uncle both are Veterans, my grandfather fought in WWII and my uncle fought in Vietnam. However, this year it's just a LITTLE bit different.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Wedding bells are chiming, birds are chirping(well, the ones that haven't drowned from the rain that is out here in the Pacific Northwest, that is), and flowers are blooming! My Dad asked me over breakfast this morning if I could believe The Day was finally here. I responded by saying that I could, but perhaps it still hasn't quite hit me yet. I keep looking at the ring finger on my left hand and appreciating the fact that in a few hours it will never be naked again! I've had a chance to hear wedding stories from different people and they have all been fantastic. I remember my sister's wedding 6 years ago and how happy I was for her. I told my pastor last night that I knew I would be a sobbing mess at her wedding, but as brother of the bride and the responsibilities I had for the day, the ceremony came and went and my eyes didn't leak one drop! However, today may be different. Looking at Lauren last night across the table at supper, and how beautiful she looked, and feeling as though I am the luckiest person on the planet, my cheeks may not stand a chance at staying dry. If my players read through that last part, I may not live it down! What they don't know, but I do, is that one day(and the day will happen sooner than they think) it will be the first day of the rest of THEIR life, and they will be standing in front of a young woman that they love deeper and with more passion than they thought capable. That the mere thought of her, her smile, her laugh, the way SHE is...brings in their system a feeling of electricity that could light up the world. Then they'll know, as I do, that today is the first day of the rest of their life.
